Raptors Sweep Royals On Baseball Diamond To Open May

Local squads enter second month of spring season with hopes for more wins, better weather.

Cool yet cooperative conditions greeted Woodbury area athletic teams as the second month of the spring sports season began in earnest on Monday and Tuesday.

Raptors starting pitcher Mark Landgrebe hurled a four-hitter in six innings of work before Sam Motzko finished off the visitors in the seventh. Woodbury starter Ryan Fritze gave up three earned runs on eight hits over five innings before yielding to reliever Jordan Lund.

The Royals' lone run came off a solo home run from Chase Lonetti  in the fourth inning; the Raptors were led offensively by Brad Schmit's 3-for-3 day, while Andy Sammon, Grady Rolando, David Lang, Tom Drtina and John Hietpas all recorded RBIs.

East Ridge improved to 8-4 overall with the win and are one game off the lead pace in the Suburban East Conference with a 6-4 circuit record. The Raptors travel to Hastings for a 4:15 p.m. game on Wednesday.

New Life Academy Baseball: Legacy Christian 9, Eagles 2

The baseball team fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association with a 9-2 loss to Legacy Christian on Tuesday at Bielenberg.

Math and Science Academy Baseball: Dragons 15, Minnesota Transitions 2

The baseball team topped Minnesota Transitions Charter 15-2 on Monday to improve to 6-2 on the spring.

New Life Academy Softball: Eagles One-Hit Legacy Christian

The New Life Academy softball team one-hit MCAA foe Legacy Christian Academy in a 10-0 win on Tuesday to improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Starting pitcher Rebekah Schmidt struck out eight and did not give up a hit in three innings of work before giving way to reliever Valerie Hohol, who worked two innings and struck out one, while allowing one hit and one walk.

Hohol and Lauren Anders both drove in two runs to lead the Eagles, with Lauren St. John going 3-for-4 with a triple; Anders, Katie Stodolka and Natalie Schad scored two runs apiece.

New Life, ranked second in the Class A poll, hosts Bethany Academy on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bielenberg.

Woodbury Softball: Stillwater 2, Royals 1

The Woodbury softball team fell to 3-5 on the season after being nipped, 2-1, by visiting Stillwater on Monday at .

Pitcher Abbie Morris struck out six Ponies and gave up just one earned run, yet suffered the loss as a sixth-inning run scored by Alex Benedict and driven in by Katie Sieben was all the offense the hosts could muster. Morris went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single and a double.

Woodbury hosts Hastings on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

East Ridge Softball: Park 9, Raptors 0

A 9-0 drubbing at the hands of southern neighbor Park on Monday dropped the East Ridge softball team to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the Suburban East.

The Raptors managed just two hits in the game, while the Wolfpack scored a run in five of seven innings to hang a loss on starting pitcher Sam Gregory.

East Ridge travels to Cretin-Derham Hall for a 4:15 p.m. game on Wednesday.

Woodbury Boys Lacrosse: Royals Explode For 16 Goals In Win

The Woodbury boys lacrosse team got out some of their frustrations over a lack of scoring this season with a 16-6 throttling of host Rochester Century on Monday night.

After scoring in single-digits in four of its first five games in putting up a 1-4 record, the Royals claimed win No. 2 of the year with its highest-grossing output of the spring to date.

Blake Bergherr scored five goals, with Ben Alberts notching four scores and Thomas Gand three tallies as Josh Erickson made eight saves in the Woodbury net.

The Royals, 1-1 in the Suburban East, will look for its second conference win on Wednesday as White Bear Lake comes to town for a 7 p.m. game.

East Ridge/Park Boys Lacrosse: Mounds View 6, SWC 5 (2OT)

The East Ridge/Park boys lacrosse team fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the SEC with a 6-5 double-overtime loss at Mounds View on Monday.

Woodbury/East Ridge Girls Lacrosse: Cretin-Derham Hall 15, Griffins 6

Woodbury Boys Track And Field: Royals Third At Bob Stewart Invite

The Woodbury boys track and field team recorded 124.5 points to finish third at the Bob Stewart Invitational at Mounds View High School on Tuesday.

The Royals 4x1600-meter sprint medley relay team of Abiola Abodunde, Davis Johnson, Kyle Haugen and Christian Gomeztagle placed first in a time of three minutes, 46.54 seconds.

Individually, Torsten Rotto won both the discus and shot put with respective hurls of 155 feet, 10 inches and 47-09.

East Ridge Boys Track And Field: Raptors Fourth At Mounds View

The East Ridge boys track and field team finished fourth at the Bob Stewart Invitational at Mounds View High School, recording 111 points, on Tuesday.

The Raptors 4x100-meter relay quartet of Ezekiel Okeleye, Connor Lyons, Val Huerta and Oludayo Ogundepo took first in a time of 44.03 seconds.

Individually, Nate Roese won the 400-meter dash in 50.60 seconds, with John Stephens' leap of 6-2.5 winning the high jump.

East Ridge Boys Golf: Raptors Win Saatzer Invite

With a team round of 320 over 18 holes, the East Ridge boys golf squad won the Don Saatzer Invitational at Hastings Golf Course on Monday.

The Raptors then finished eighth in a Suburban East meet at River Oaks Golf Course with a card of 330 on Tuesday.
