Relay For Life Global Celebration

Thousands of cancer stories unite as one universal symbol of hope at Mall of America®

The celebration of the world’s largest movement to end cancer – American Cancer Society Relay For Life® – is coming to Mall of America® on August 19-20!

This is the first event held in the new Atrium of Mall of America – it will use art, music, and community to unite thousands of cancer stories into one universal symbol of hope for the world. Thousands of cancer stories have been submitted from around the country to help fill the Atrium with hand-painted, and hand-dedicated representations of courage and determination representing the world’s collective desire to end the pain and suffering of cancer.

Relay For Life began more than 30 years ago when Dr. Gordy Klatt, born in Stillwater, Minnesota, circled a high school track for 24-hours in Tacoma, Washington. It remains a community-based, grassroots event, but has grown to be the signature event of the American Cancer Society and is the largest movement to end cancer in the world rallying millions to fight cancer in more than 5,000 communities throughout the United States and more than 20 countries around the world.

The Relay For Life movement will call Mall of America home over the course of this two-day event. The Atrium will feature an enormous globe of hand-painted butterflies submitted from hundreds of communities that represent their shared mission to change the course of cancer. Artist Tasha Wahl, founder of “Butterfly Effect” who will attend the event, collaborated with Tivoli Too based in Mendota Heights, MN to bring this artistic vision to reality.

Also in the Atrium, will be an art installation of stars hand-dedicated and assembled by American Cancer Society volunteers throughout the event – it will grow to three stories tall and fill the Atrium. This will form a stunning and inspiring constellation of hope to surround the globe. The event culminates with a concert featuring a performance by Taboo, of the Black Eyed Peas, and inspirational remarks from noted jewelry artist and cancer survivor, Simone I. Smith.
