Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Season Begins For Local Squads

Several Woodbury, East Ridge, New Life Academy teams commence their 2011 campaigns.

A number of teams from and , as well as , began their fall sports season last week, with more getting going this week, as well.

Woodbury Girls Soccer

The Woodbury girls soccer team got off to a terrific start to the season, winning the Duluth East Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall last Friday and a 2-1 overtime besting of No. 1-ranked Eden Prairie on Saturday.

Madison Nelson leads the Royals with two goals and two assists through the opening set of contests, with Rachael Van Keulen, Kristina White and Lauren Nash each chipping in one tally apiece; White also logged two assists. Goalkeeper Casey White made eight saves over the weekend stretch.

Woodbury is scheduled host cross-town rival East Ridge at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Woodbury Boys Soccer

A 2-1 win over visiting Champlin Park last Thursday combined with a 2-1 loss at Hill-Murray on Saturday to give the Woodbury boys soccer team a split in its opening week.

Indidivual statistics were not available. The Royals host intra-district rival East Ridge at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Woodbury Volleyball

The Woodbury of the season on Monday night, losing in three-straight games to visiting Duluth East (13-25, 23-25, 20-25) in the Lion's Den.

Sara Biermaier led the Royals with eight kills, with Olivia Wangensteen and Abyssinia Andualem-Emiru notching seven kills apiece. Chloe Richter and Andualem-Emiru each dished out eighth assists, with Wangensteen earning 10 digs.

Woodbury travels to Eagan for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday.

East Ridge Girls Soccer

The East Ridge girls soccer team won the Irondale Tournament last week with back-to-back victories over St. Michael Albertville (3-2 in overtime) and Mound Westonka (5-0) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Individual results were not available. The Raptors travel across town to face sixth-ranked Woodbury on Thursday at 7 p.m. in their lone game of the week.

East Ridge Boys Soccer

The East Ridge boys soccer team took third in the Irondale Tournament, losing to St. Michael-Albertville (2-1) in the opener last Friday, then thumping the hosts (6-1) on Saturday.

Won Suk Chung led the Raptors with two goals and two assists in the tourney, with Niko Ralief logging one goal and one assist. 

East Ridge plays at Woodbury at 5 p.m. Thursday before hosting ninth-ranked Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Saturday.

East Ridge Volleyball

The East Ridge volleyball team won its season opener over New Life Academy last Friday, then fell at Champlin Park on Monday.

After sweeping the Eagles in three-straight games (25-15, 25-12, 25-15), the Raptors were nipped in five games (22-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 12-15) against the Rebels to drop to 1-1.

Kristen Jorgensen leads East Ridge with 64 assists, with Felecia Ulrich pacing the squad with 44 kills through two matches; Dale Hoeffel tops the Raptors with 20 digs.

East Ridge hosts St. Michael-Albertville at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Woodbury and East Ridge Girls Tennis

The East Ridge and Woodbury girls tennis teams hosted the annual Royal Raptor quadrangular tournament last Thursday, with the Raptors claiming three wins for the invitational title, topping the Royals (5-2), Tartan (7-0) and St. Paul Harding (5-2). Woodbury defeated Tartan by a 6-1 score.

Individual results were not available.

Woodbury, East Ridge Girls Swimming/Diving

The Woodbury and East Ridge in customary manner with an appearance in the Suburban East Conference Relays at Stillwater and Cottage Grove junior high schools on Thursday.

The Royals finished second at the meet with 138 points, with East Ridge claiming 76 points for fourth. Stillwater won the meet with 154 points.

Eagles Girls Soccer

The New Life Academy girls soccer team had a little bit of everything in its first three games, earning one win, one loss and one tie.

Following an 8-0 win at Spectrum/PACT last Thursday, the Eagles lost 5-0 at Simley before knotting visiting Henry Sibley 2-2 on Monday.

New Life plays at St. Paul Johnson on Tuesday at 5 p.m., then hosts Legacy Christian at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Eagles Boys Soccer

A pair of 3-0 losses gave the New Life Academy boys soccer team a rude awakening to the 2011 season.

The Eagles fell by that same score at St. Paul's Como Park and Johnson last Thursday and Saturday, respectively. 

New Life plays at St. Paul Humboldt at 5 p.m. Tuesday and at PACT at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Eagles Volleyball

The New Life Academy volleyball team lost its season opener in three games at neighboring East Ridge (15-25, 12-25, 15-25) on Friday night.

Individual statistics were not available.

Results were not available for the New Life Academy girls tennis team.
