My husband and I are Professional Ballroom Dance Instructors, and we're in high Wedding Season right now- teaching a lot of Brides/Grooms, Parents, Wedding Parties, and Bridal Shower guests how to dance in preparation of attending wedding receptions! (I actually remember posting about wedding dance lessons on my blog last year too!)
What to learn? The three most useful dances are Rumba, Swing, and Waltz. These three styles cover the widest variety of music types and tempos, including modern music of today. We will teach you how to hear the music and what you're listening for to know which style of dance to use for each song. You can also give us a list of songs and we'll tell you which dances go to them.
How to learn? If you've got time, you can casually take our 4 week Group Class series, a few times (to learn multiple styles of dances). If you need to learn faster, use your own music, or want a routine choreographed, then schedule Private Lessons. If you want to learn what you want, when you want, and with your own group of friends, schedule a Private Group Lesson. We also come to you for Offsite Lessons! Just yesterday, I taught at a bridal shower of 40 ladies out in River Falls! We also teach for Bachelorette parties.
How to entertain guests? Besides taking a series of lessons in preparation of "the big day," we often get hired to teach at the wedding reception (we can also be your music DJ). Often times there is time to kill between the ceremony, dinner, and the reception. That's when we come in to teach all the wedding guests a dance lesson to keep them entertained- and distracted while the wedding party is taking pictures, or the venue is setting up.
When calling us to schedule dance lessons, you should know your availability/schedule, if you have specific music (i.e. a "First Dance" song), and what your budget and time frame is.
Advice:
1. Carry in the shoes you plan to dance in at the reception, and practice in them.
2. Don't choose the super-slow un-danceable Etta James song, "At Last."
