Woodbury Student Wins Congressional Art Contest

this week announced the top four Congressional Art Competition winners from her district.

For the third year in a row, a student from won first place.

Brittany Moreno, a 10^th-grader, entered a mixed-media painting titled, “Looking through Broken Glass,” depicting sailboats drifting along a river. Moreno is the daughter of Jeff and Deborah Moreno of Woodbury.

The annual competition encourages high school students to enter their artwork to be judged by a panel of artists. The winning piece represents Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District by hanging in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

Second place honors went to Jessica Richardt, of Rockford High School, for her digital photograph, “Lost in the Field.” Richardt is the daughter of Dennis and Kristi Richardt of Rockford.

A photograph titled, “Eve,” by Breana Voss of Woodbury High School, won third place. Voss is the daughter of Dave and Marsha Voss of Woodbury.

Laura Stafki, of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Oak Grove, received fourth place for her pencil drawing titled, “Breeze of Hope.” Stakfi is the daughter of John and Annette Stafki of Oak Grove.

“Yet again, the judges were presented fine pieces of art from across the 6th District,” Bachmann said in a statement. “I congratulate this year’s winners and thank all the participating students and their teachers for their hard work and for sharing their talents.”

Karen Seashore, Art Department head at Woodbury High School and Moreno's teacher, said students have been “excited” to participate in the contest.

“I am very proud of the students who have won this award from Woodbury the past three years,” Seashore said in a release from Bachmann’s office. “They are not only talented artists but great people—some of Woodbury’s finest students. The chance to have their work hanging in Washington D.C. for the public to view is truly an honor for these individuals. This year’s winner, Brittany Moreno, told me when I shared the news, ‘My day was not going very well, but now, you made it a great day. Thanks!’”
