Port activity, the airport, downtown Main Street, and attractions like the Mississippi Aquarium and nearby Gulf Islands National Seashore are fueling that growth, reshaping neighborhoods, traffic, and opportunities for longtime locals along the coast.
   

2. Gulf Ship investing $44 million to expand Gulfport shipyard (magnoliatribune.com) — Gulf Ship is investing about $44 million to modernize and expand its Gulfport shipyard, a project expected to create 121 new jobs by 2028. The upgrades will add advanced manufacturing technology, boost capacity for commercial and government vessels, and are backed by state and Harrison County support, strengthening Gulfport's role in U.S. shipbuilding.
   

3. Former Louisiana officer pleads guilty to retaliating against witness in Mississippi (wjtv.com) — In a case handled out of Gulfport, a former Louisiana police officer has pleaded guilty in federal court to retaliating against a confidential informant tied to an illegal animal fighting investigation in Mississippi. Prosecutors say he shared discovery materials to expose the informant and even urged other officers to detain the person at work; sentencing is set for January 2027.
   

4. Gulfport man arrested, charged with hit-and-run death of Coast man (sunherald.com) — A 46-year-old Gulfport man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed Jimmy Alexander Mero in Long Beach on Sunday. Police say the suspect allegedly struck Mero on 1st Street and left without calling for help; Mero later died at Gulfport Memorial Hospital, and the suspect is jailed on a $250,000 bond.
