Jail Docket for the week of October 1, 2026 (hubcityspokes.com) — Hattiesburg-area law enforcement released this week's jail docket, listing dozens of people arrested or held on charges ranging from DUI and domestic violence to drug trafficking and kidnapping. Forrest, Lamar and nearby county agencies, plus Hattiesburg Police and university police, all report bookings that give residents a snapshot of current public safety activity.
2. William Carey celebrates new art building (wdam.com) — Hattiesburg's William Carey University has opened a new 6,400-square-foot art building on its campus at Cherry Street, giving art majors a permanent home after years of scattered classrooms. Students and faculty say the dedicated studios and collaboration spaces match the program's rapid growth and should help future artists stay, thrive and create in Hattiesburg.
3. 12th Circuit Intervention Court and graduates honor Judge Robert Helfrich (darkhorsepressnow.com) — In Hattiesburg, 25 Forrest and Perry County residents recently graduated from the 12th Circuit Intervention Court, celebrating years of work to overcome addiction. The program was officially renamed for the late Judge Robert "Bob" Helfrich, whose supporters and family recalled how his drug court gave people second chances, inspired careers in recovery work, and has now helped more than 650 graduates build stable lives.
4. McElhaney Plumbing and Hardware salesman retires after 4 decades with the store (wdam.com) — In Hattiesburg, McElhaney Plumbing and Hardware is celebrating salesman Carl Reid as he retires after 45 years of helping local customers. The century-old store marked his final day with appreciation for his decades of service, while Reid reflected warmly on the many relationships he's built across generations of Hattiesburg shoppers.
