First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 48 Low: 26.

Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:

  1. $500,000 of the city's American Rescue Plan Act funds will help the Jackson Convention Complex keep its lights on. Though the measure was approved by a unanimous vote, some council members expressed concerns about the convention center's ability to sustain itself long-term without further funding. (WLBT)
  2. The Mississippi State Department of Public Health (MSDH) reported that it plans to meet the statutory requirements of the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act, recently signed by Governor Tate Reeves. MSDH leaders are currently working to establish licensing and patient registry structures, with the online application process opening to the public by June. (WJTV)
  3. The Jackson metro area escaped a major winter storm that walloped northern Mississippi Friday morning. While ice accumulations led to several power outages in DeSoto, Tate, and Marshall County, Jackson roads were clear (if not cold). (WAPT Jackson)

Today in Jackson:

  • Movie Matinee - R.G. Bolden / Anna Bell-Moore Library (10:30 AM)
  • Showtime Movie Matinee - Medgar Evers Boulevard Library (1:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • An 18-year-old was killed in an accidental shooting Thursday night on Barnes Street. Jackson authorities are investigating the incident. (WAPT Jackson)
  • After going virtual for two weeks due to water pressure problems, all Jackson Public Schools returned to in-person instruction on Friday. (WAPT Jackson)
  • Head over to the Mississippi Children's Museum's "Ignite the Night: New York State of Mind" event on Feb. 12 for food, drinks, entertainment, and more. (Facebook)
