Today's riddle: Why are elevator jokes so good ? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Fire chief addresses repeated calls to Chapel Ridge Apartments (wapt.com) — Jackson's fire chief is raising concerns about repeated fires at the vacant Chapel Ridge Apartments on Raymond Road, where crews have responded at least six times this year. Officials say squatters and homeless individuals are likely setting the blazes, leaving the deteriorating complex an eyesore filled with debris while ownership and future plans remain unclear.
2. Despite rumors Fondren Corner has not sold (northsidesun.com) — If you've heard Fondren Corner already sold, that rumor's premature. Peters Realty still owns the landmark blue mixed-use building in Jackson's Fondren neighborhood, while a potential buyer continues months of due diligence and tenants remain in place. Any sale likely wouldn't close until late 2026 or even 2027–2028.
3. Grammy award jazz singer Cassandra Wilson dead at age 70 (wavepublication.com) — Jackson residents are mourning Grammy-winning jazz legend Cassandra Wilson, who died this week at age 70 in her hometown. The acclaimed singer grew up in Jackson, studied at Millsaps and Jackson State, and was praised by Mayor John Horhn for carrying Mississippi's sound and spirit worldwide. Her career spanned genres and earned top national honors.
4. What it meant for Jackson State WR Nate Rembert to have career night vs former team (clarionledger.com) — Jackson State fans just watched wide receiver Nate Rembert explode for 179 receiving yards and four big-play catches in the Tigers' 66-14 home-opening win at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. His breakout performance came against his former team, Edward Waters, and was made possible by an extra year of eligibility granted through a lawsuit challenging NCAA rules.
