• Former Jackson mayor Lumumba, Owens and Banks get new sentencing date (clarionledger.com) — Jackson residents now know that former Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, ex–District Attorney Jody Owens and former City Councilman Aaron Banks will be sentenced on Nov. 5, 2026, in a federal bribery case tied to a proposed downtown hotel. The trio admitted to a conspiracy involving undercover FBI agents posing as developers near the Jackson Convention Complex, and each faces up to five years in prison and significant fines.
• Texas District Seeks Staff Development Services; Miss. System Needs Math, ELA Diagnostic (edweek.org) — Jackson Public Schools is actively seeking a new diagnostic assessment and tiered intervention program for pre-K through 12th-grade reading and math, with proposals due Sept. 30, 2026. The district wants a single platform that supports adaptive testing, progress monitoring, grouping recommendations and professional development, potentially under a one- or three-year contract that could shape classroom instruction across Jackson.
• Media highlights race of Mississippi hanging victim Tasia Fortune but not the race of suspected killer (foxnews.com) — A recent national story about the killing of Tasia Fortune, whose body was found hanging outside an abandoned home in Jackson is drawing attention for how major outlets describe race. Coverage decisions by CNN, NBC, ABC, AP and USA Today are being criticized for emphasizing the victim's race while initially downplaying or omitting the Black suspect's race, raising questions about media framing that directly involve a Jackson case.
