🌱 City Council On Safety Checkpoints + 60K New Water Meters
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Jackson.

Get on up, Jackson! Let's get you all caught up to start this Tuesday, March 1 off on an informed note. Here's what's happening today in town.
First, today's weather:
Some clouds, then sunshine. High: 68 Low: 39.
Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:
- The Mississippi Center for Justice recently filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Jackson for allegedly targeting majority-black, low-income areas for its police safety checkpoints. On Sunday, Jackson City Council members spoke out in favor of the checkpoints, citing their effectiveness in the city's fight against crime. Despite the lawsuit, Jackson Police Department Chief James Davis stated he has no intention of stopping the initiative. (WLBT)
- Between now and 2023, nearly 60,000 defective water meters will be replaced in the City of Jackson. The city's new advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is designed to allow multiple means of network connections in the event of storm damage. According to Jackson Public Works Administration Deputy Director Carla Dazet, the new AMI system is more reliable and will require less equipment. (WJTV)
- On Monday, Mar. 14, Jackson residents aged 16-24 are invited to the 2022 Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Expo and Vaccination Drive. The event will be held at Sykes Park Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice their interviewing skills by talking to potential employers. (WJTV)
Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is "Drink like there's tomorrow.") Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We've tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.

From my notebook:
- Safiya R. Omari Ph.D., Jackson Chief of Staff, stated that the heated exchange between her and Councilman Kenneth Stokes was intended to disrespect and silence her. She believes the City Council should hold Stokes accountable for "using language that had to be bleeped on the news broadcast." (WAPT Jackson)
