Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:
- The City of Jackson is expected to receive $42 million from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and has allocated $3.93 million to purchase and renovate the former Batte Furniture and Interiors building. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has said he wants to purchase the building to house a library, police precinct, or city offices. The building is located at 1010 East Northside Drive and was listed for sale at $1,995,000 last year. (WJTV)
- The City of Jackson held an auction for nearly 400 vehicles on Saturday. The bidding started early in the morning and went through the afternoon with over 100 people in attendance. The auction boasted many different types of vehicles, including ATVs, SUVs, side-by-sides, boats, cars, trucks, and vans. Most of the vehicles auctioned were either stolen, seized, or abandoned. (WAPT Jackson)
- An artist is hoping to bring healing to Jackson through art. Shani Peters unveiled "Collective Care," an art installation she created on Farish Street. Peters said her inspiration is the role Black women take on as caregivers while enduring suffering and violence. Her hope is that Black women and women of color can use "Collective Care" as a practical, day-to-day resource. (WJTV)
