Here are the top stories today in Jackson:

  1. Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area will open a Habitat ReStore on Jan. 11 in Jackson. The ReStore will resell household and construction-related items that were donated. All of the profits support projects done through Habitat. (Jackson Free Press)
  2. A Jackson man who was afraid of dying behind bars will be released on a plea deal. Anthony Thomas entered a plea of guilty to a marijuana possession charge from 2012, and the Circuit Judge accepted the plea on Monday. The plea deal includes a seven-year, 364-day suspended sentence, as well as five years of supervised release. (WLBT)
  3. The COVID-19 Omicron variant has been confirmed in Mississippi as of Monday. It was announced that the individual was fully vaccinated and did not need to be hospitalized. (Mississippi State Department of Health)
  4. Jackson police responded to a deadly shooting on Grand Avenue Monday evening, where a man was shot to death in his car before colliding with several other cars. (WJTV)
  5. The First Baptist Church of Jackson, Mississippi is hosting "Carols by Candlelight" this weekend from Dec. 10 to 12. All presentations will be livestreamed. (Ballet Magnificat)
