Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:
- On Monday, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and City Council members attended the launch of a two-year community safety initiative that was created in response to the uptick in violence in Jackson. The National League of City's Municipalities Reimagining Community Safety Initiative will result in $1 million in investments through pass-through grant funding and include evaluation/coaching from local and national partners. The initiative called for the need for a coordinated local response, both in Jackson and surrounding cities. (City of Jackson)
- On Wednesday, Mississippi lawmakers discussed the latest proposal to increase teachers' salaries. Mississippi has some of the lowest teacher salaries in the nation, and negotiators said they hope to reach a final deal soon. Senators offered an average increase of about $5,100 which is a jump of more than 10 percent over many educators' current pay. (Jackson Free Press)
- On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate approved a bill that may make daylight saving time permanent in the U.S. Using projected data for 2022-23 for Jackson, a permanent daylight saving time would mean the sun wouldn't get up until 8 a.m. during the winter months. That same Jackson data shows the earliest sunset, which is currently scheduled for 4:56 p.m. in early December 2022, would now be 5:56 p.m. (WBLT)
