The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Jackson.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Jackson! Like many of you, the Patch team is taking some time off to celebrate the New Year, so there will not be a newsletter in your inbox tomorrow. We appreciate your understanding of this slight pause in our schedule, and I will be back on Monday with the next edition of the Jackson Daily! Now, here's everything happening around town today.

First, today's weather:

A passing afternoon shower. High: 80 Low: 70.

Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. JSU received a $150K endowment from The P3 Group, Inc. They will be using the funds to provide scholarships to full-time JSU students who demonstrate financial need. The endowment will be funded over five years through 2025. (Jackson Free Press)
  2. Mississippi is likely headed for its 5th COVID-19 wave. The Jackson mayor closed city offices amid the virus surge, and they will be closed until at least next week. (Rock Hill Herald)
  3. Rankin County Sheriff's Dept. is seeing benefits from having deputies wear body cameras. It not only verifies reports given by the deputies themselves, but it also helps to check footage against what people say about their encounters with the deputies. It offers protection for both parties. (WLBT)
