Happy Friday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know today in town.

First, today's weather:

Cooler; cloudy, then some sun. High: 48 Low: 26.

Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. A Jackson man is challenging state laws to open a home healthcare business. Charles Slaughter said a decades-old moratorium is in the way of being able to serve the needs of people more efficiently. He, along with the Mississippi Justice Institute, filed a federal lawsuit to have the law removed from the books; however, this is only one step in the process. (WLBT)
  2. The Jackson City Council approved a $4,000 premium pay for some police and fire department members. All police sergeants, corporals, fire department captains, and lieutenants employed with the city on or after March 1, 2021, will receive the payments. Annual base salaries for police sergeants and fire captains will now start at $48,000. (Free: Yahoo! News, Subscription: Clarion Ledger)
  3. Jackson and Capitol police are at odds over who should investigate a deadly shooting that happened on Tuesday. JPD says Capitol police officers should have responded, but they were denying them any assistance. Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell explained that Capitol Police didn't respond because it's outside the Capitol Improvement District, which is out of the jurisdiction of the city of Jackson.
