Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:

  1. The Jackson Hinds Library System is hosting a free skills training program from May 2 through Jun. 3. The program is meant to allow participants to build skills while finding jobs in the digital economy. Applications are being accepted until the Apr. 25 deadline. (Press Release Desk)
  2. The Mississippi Department of Transportation held a ceremony honoring highway workers that lost their lives while working on the state's infrastructure. The ceremony was held on Wednesday at the department's Administration building in Jackson. Forty-eight department employees were honored during the ceremony. (WJTV)
  3. The Jackson City Council has overridden a veto by Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba on garbage collection during Wednesday's city council meeting. The City Council President was reportedly disappointed in the Mayor's veto after the settlement that was agreed upon in the call. The vote was 6-1 with Councilwoman Lee abstaining from the vote.   • Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has provided an update on Bruce the bear. The 331-pound bear was captured late Tuesday, Apr. 6 and was ear-tagged and fitted with a GPS satellite collar which will allow the department to monitor his daily movements for about two years.
