🌱 New JSU Police Chief Announced + Fatal Car Accident On I-55

First, today's weather:

Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. JSU has appointed Herman Horton to serve as the new chief of police for Jackson State University's Department of Public Safety. "I could not be more honored to serve and protect at my alma mater – Jackson State University," said Horton. In a statement, the chief said his primary mission is to ensure the safety of the campus community, and he intends to accomplish this through collaboration and listening to the needs of the community. (WLBT)
  2. Joshua Michael Garcia, 42, was handed three life sentences for triple homicide involving men killed at a Jackson pawn shop in December of 2016. The owner of Bill's Coin and Jewelry, along with two employees, were killed when Garcia discharged a firearm during an armed robbery. He was sentenced on Monday in U.S. District Court in Jackson and was ordered to pay more than $35,000 in restitution. (WJTV)
  3. A woman was killed in a single-car accident on northbound I-55 on Monday morning. The vehicle involved ran off the road and then flipped. The passenger in the vehicle, Gigi Love, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Jerry Hammond, 44, sustained injuries and was transported to Jackson for treatment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. (WJTV)

  • Jackson State University National Alumni Association is holding its Blue Tie Gala on Saturday, Apr. 9. This event will honor alum of the university, and scholarships will also be awarded to 30 students. (Facebook)
  • Registration is now open for East Mississippi Community College's Beauty and Beau Pageant. Interested participants need to complete their registration by 4:30 p.m. on Mar. 25. (Instagram)
