  1. Garbage collection contract negotiations have broken down in Jackson, leading Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to declare a city emergency. Jackson's garbage contract with Waste Management is set to expire Sept. 30, meaning residents could be without waste collection services in as little as two weeks. According to city leaders, failure to properly collect and dispose of garbage could incur civil penalties of up to $25,000 a day and other legal action by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.   2. A surveillance video shows a U.S. Marshal a hitting murder suspect during an arrest in Jackson on Thursday. During the arrest of 17-year-old Kevin Harris and 16-year-old Demetrius Lee, who are accused of killing two in a Canton shooting last month, the Marshal was caught on a Ring camera hitting Harris in the face.   3. The Jackson Public School District doesn't have a new vaccine policy yet, but Sherwin Johnson, the District's Executive Director of Public Engagement, hasn't ruled out that one may put into place in the near future. (WLBT)
  4. Jackson State University and the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center will be providing free COVID-19 vaccinations to students, faculty, staff, and community members on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at One University Place.. (WJTV)
  5. Nine people will be running in the Nov. 2 special election for the District 32 Mississippi Senate seat vacated by Senator Sampson Jackson, who retired in June after 29 years. (Jackson Free Press)
