• Lauderdale County grand jury calls for new detention facility, higher pay (wtok.com) — Lauderdale County's August grand jury is urging leaders to plan a new detention facility outside downtown Meridian and boost pay for correctional officers, deputies, and EMTs to improve staffing and retention. Jurors also flagged unsafe heat on the inmate transport bus and requested better transportation before the November grand jury session, along with small upgrades to their own workspace.
   

• Former Meridian teacher charged with sexual battery, child exploitation (meridianstar.com) — Meridian officials have announced that a former Meridian Public School District teacher has been charged with sexual battery and two counts of child exploitation following a police investigation into 2025 allegations. The Meridian Police Department says the case remains active, details are limited to protect the victim's privacy, and residents are urged to share any additional information with investigators.
