Meridian Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter is preparing to wash the campus
in pink in support of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 

With an Oct. 1 mayoral proclamation and an Oct. 23 race and strut, PTK is driven to
honor breast cancer survivors and current breast cancer patients, increase breast
cancer awareness, and raise funds for the Anderson Cancer Patient Benevolence Fund.  

“We’re excited to bring people to our campus for the Queen City Race for Life and
Street Strut” said Phyllis Holladay, PTK co-advisor and math instructor, as she noted
the race and strut were traditionally held in Downtown Meridian but are now moved
to the MCC Highway 19 North campus. Last year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19. 

To bring the awareness month to the forefront, on Friday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. in front
of Ivy-Scaggs Hall, Meridian Mayor Jimmie Smith will read a proclamation declaring
October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Campus and community are welcome to attend. 

Later in the month, on Saturday, Oct. 23, the Queen City Race for Life and Street
Strut takes off with a five-kilometer walk/run, a one-mile fun run and the Street
Strut with its unique, handcrafted umbrellas. The 5-K begins at 8 a.m.; the one-mile
fun run starts at 9 a.m. 

Holladay noted that Miss Mississippi Holly Brand, who was a member of Phi Theta Kappa,
will be attending the event, singing the national anthem and helping to judge the
umbrella competition. 

With various campus organizations pitching in, there will be other activities and
door prizes for participants.
