Affton High School Hosts Special Olympics
St. Louis Public Schools' Special Olympic athletes spent the morning running and jumping in the Affton High School gymnasium.
Special Olympic athletes would not let a little rain stop their games this Monday. The event, originally scheduled to take place on the field at Affton High School, was moved into the gymnasium so that the 107 athletes could still enjoy the games. Although the softball throw could not be moved indoors, athletes were still able to compete in track events and in the long jump.
“Most of the students look forward to the games all year long,” said Rosalie Buscher, Special Olympics coordinator for the St. Louis Public Schools. “This gives them a chance to compete in something they couldn’t do in their neighborhoods or in school athletics.”
Buscher worked in conjunction with Affton teacher and student council sponsor Rebecca Summer to put on the games. “This is my third year helping with the games,” Summer said. “I believe it’s the 10th year for Affton High to host. The Special Olympics are very important to us.”
