Majors Katrina and Kendall Mathews can be well described as a “dynamic duo”, teaming up to “recycle goods, reclaim lives, and rebuild families” here at the St. Louis Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (3949 Forest Park Avenue). The center, which houses men suffering from drug and alcohol addictions, is in for many changes this year. Transitioning from their last four year assignment in
Columbia, Missouri, the Mathews bring with them fresh ideas, knowledge, and faith to the greater St. Louis community. As Major Mathews says, he is the “idea
man” while his wife is the go-getter.
Some of their new projects that will benefit not only those in the rehabilitation center but the surrounding city as well include a back to school savings plan for college students, media involvement through local radio and television
stations, and the establishment of a bond with Maryville University and surrounding St. Louis colleges such as UMSL, SLU, Washington University, and Lincoln University. Students majoring in rehabilitation services or psychology
can apply to Sal Corps., a service learning program in which they receive a certificate of completion and a personalized letter of recommendation upon finishing their internship at the St. Louis Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center.
Aside from these new and exciting proposals, Majors Katrina and Kendall Mathews have taken immediate action themselves in forming a relationship with St. Louis
parents and children. On August 14th, 2012, only one month into their new assignment, the Majors made a deal with a local Sea Scouts troop that allowed them to distribute hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to kids in need. Major Mathews believes that establishing these relationships is key to gaining the support of the community.
