
United Way of Greater St. Louis has announced plans to open admissions to one or more new agencies. Already funding more than 170 local agencies, United Way looks to make a further impact to help people in the region by accepting new applicants.
In addition to meeting United Way’s Quality Standards, to be considered for admission an agency must provide services in one of the following three areas:
- Health and human services targeting women/girls in St. Louis City and/or the Missouri counties of St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Warren and Lincoln in one of the three sub-categories: Any health and human services, Senior services or Mental health services for the under and uninsured
- Health and human services located in the Illinois counties of St. Clair, Clinton, Monroe and Randolph in one of the two sub-categories: Any health and human services, Substance abuse services or Youth programming located in East St. Louis, Illinois
United Way carefully distributes its funds only to charities that have demonstrated high quality standards and proven results. In addition, the following types of services and agencies are ineligible for United Way membership:

- Services or agencies that are primarily political in nature
- Services or agencies where programs are limited to members of a particular religious or racial group
- Agencies existing solely for the presentation of cultural or artistic achievements
- The provision of direct medical care or research
- Basic educational program services considered the mandated responsibility of the public education system
- Direct housing services targeted toward the physical development, construction, maintenance, or repair of housing
- Capital expenses or seed money for new programs
Eligible agencies that provide services in one of the listed areas are encouraged to attend one of six informational meetings. Each meeting will last 90 minutes and will discuss requirements for United Way members and the application process. Attending an informational session is strongly advised, but it is not a requirement. The meeting dates and locations are:
- Monday, July 16 at 11 a.m., United Way, 910 N. 11th Street, St. Louis, MO 63101
- Tuesday, July 17 at 1 p.m., YMCA of Southwest Illinois, 424 Lebanon, Belleville, IL 62220
- Wednesday, July 18 at 3 p.m., St. Charles County Library, Spencer Road Branch, 427 Spencer Road, St. Peters. MO 63376
- Tuesday, July 24 at 9 a.m., United Way, 910 N. 11th Street, St. Louis, MO 63101
- Friday, July 27 at 9:30 a.m., St. Louis County Library, Cliff Cave Branch, 5430 Telegraph Rd., St. Louis, MO 63129
- Tuesday, July 31 at 3 p.m., Human Support Services, 988 North Illinois Route 3, Waterloo, IL 62298
For agencies wishing to go forward with the application process, part one will be due on December 14, 2012.

By January 16, 2013 select agencies will be contacted regarding eligibility and invited to participate in part two of the application process. After site visits are conducted, agencies will be informed of the decline or acceptance of their application in May of 2013. The selected agencies will be eligible to receive funding from United Way in January of 2014.
