Wanted: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Volunteers

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers across the state to help Missouri taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities.

“In over 30 years, we’ve assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns,” Said Lynn Boulware, AARP Missouri Tax-Aide state coordinator. “We could not do it without the hundreds of volunteers who make the indelible mark on the communities they help.” Boulware said that last year, more than 650 Tax-Aide volunteers in Missouri helped over 60,000 taxpayers across the state. They join more than 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers across the country, helping millions of taxpayers each year.

According to Boulware, some Missouri Tax-Aide volunteers have participated in the program for over 25 years. “In addition to saving taxpayers the cost of having returns prepared, in Missouri we assisted the taxpayers in receiving more than $23 million in refunds this year. Fifteen percent of those served qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a Federal credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families,” she added.
