Fuel Up to Play Smoothies
Rogers Middle 8th graders learn how to make healthy after school snacks.
The smoothies were a hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Teaching the 8th grade health classes at Rogers how to make healthy after-school snacks was important for me. Many of these kids are on their own and instead of stopping at 7-11 or grabbing a bag of chips, I wanted to teach them how they could make their own tasty and healthy after school snacks. Two registered dietitian graduate students from Saint Louis University came with PowerPoint materials to teach our 8th graders about dairy products and how to incorporate those into healthy snacks. In one classroom the kids tried different types of cheese and crackers. In the other classroom we taught the kids how to make a smoothie and gave them a chance to make their own. Kelly Trom (one of the R.D.’s) taught them how to add spinach to give their smoothie more vitamins. Surprisingly, they liked it!! Each student chose from pineapple, mangos, bananas, kiwi, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Now the kids tell me they make their own smoothies at home, and some of them even taught their parents
