RBC Grant Provides Freezers for Pantry

Affton Christian Food Pantry receives grant to purchase new freezers and refrigerators.

The St. Louis Regional Business Council awarded an "It's Our Region" grant to the Affton Christian Food Pantry last week.  The theme of the "It's Our Region Fund" grants is "Small Change - Big Impact."  Issuing grants in the amount of $2,500-$20,000, the Fund focused its attention on St. Louis area nonprofits in need of help with small-scale capital improvement projects.

The Affton Christian Food Pantry has such a need.  Currently, the pantry has 1 refrigerator and 2 freezers that are not working properly, and are an unsafe means of storing food.  With the help from this grant, ACFP will purchase new, commercial-grade freezers and refrigerators to replace the non-working models.

These new appliances will allow the Affton Christian Food Pantry to receive more donated food, particularly produce, bread, pastries, and meat, and to store this food safely before distributing it to low-income families in the Affton area.

The need for hunger assistance has grown by more than 25% over the past year, as donations have dropped.  Increasingly, ACFP has had to purchase more food than ever before, simply to have enough to share with those in need.  With the addition of three new appliances, ACFP will be better able to store donated food, and to take advantage of sales on items that require cold storage.
