Driving Range Is a St. Louis Tradition
Tower Tee offers a place for rookies and veterans to enjoy the game of golf.

Steve Lotz has, in his own words, been around golf most of his life. He grew up with the game, helping out around his dad’s driving range, , when he was a kid. That experience fostered a love of the game that has lasted his whole life. He’s played as a pro and managed golf properties in Florida, but in 2002, he returned to where it all started and took over the family business.
Tower Tee is a kind of tradition in St. Louis, Lotz said. The business dates back to 1963 when Lotz’s grandfather, Roy Lotz, transformed an old brick yard into a driving range, miniature golf course and expansive putting green. In the 1970s the business expanded its par 3 course to 18 holes and, in 2005, extended its driving range from 275 yards to 390 yards.
Lotz said the focus of the business is providing a safe, fun place for families of all ages and golfers of all skill levels. A former pro and lifelong lover of the sport, Lotz explained that golf can be appreciated on any number of levels.

“I think it’s a sport that people come to for enjoyment and recreation. They find in it as much challenge as they want,” he said. “At all levels, from the beginner to the professional, there’s the opportunity to exceed.”
Helping interested individuals developing their golf game is also a big part of the business for Lotz, who likes to claim Tower Tee’s teaching staff is the best in the Midwest. However, helping others improve has personal rewards as well.

“You have the satisfaction of someone come up to you and say, ‘Thanks, I just hit my best round of golf,’” Lotz said. “It’s rewarding to see people developing.”
Unlike many other sports, it’s a development that can go on for a long time. The low impact of golf ensures it can be enjoyed for decades.
“You can go till you are 90 years old or 100 years old if you are on your feet,” Lotz said.
Lotz said Tower Tee sees a lot of regulars who come for a whole range of reasons. There are guys who want to take in the course with a few beers and some friends. There are a couple of individuals Lotz works with that have the potential to be “world-class players.” And then there are some who are just seeking stress relief.
“It’s therapeutic just to hit something,” Lotz said.
Numerous classes and group packages are available at Tower Tee, and Lotz said the business also hosts hundreds of kids every summer for various golf camps. For more information, visit the website or call 314-481-5818.
