African American Women and Children in the Civil War Era West of the Mississippi River

Dr. Wilma King will explore the experiences of these individuals on the home front in a program on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. The program, “African American Women and Children in the Civil War Era West of the Mississippi River” will attempt to answer questions about women and children on the home front, regarding the disruptions to their lives and how they confronted them as their loved ones fought and died in their quest for freedom.
Dr. King is Arvarh E. Strickland Professor of African American History and Culture and Director of the Black Studies Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is the author of Children of the Emancipation, The Essence of Liberty: Free African American Women before Emancipation, and Stolen Childhood: Slave Youth in Nineteenth Century America.
