Lindbergh Football Suffers One-Point Loss to Oakville

After nearly two hours of storms, administrators and coaches decided Oakville and Lindbergh would play football Friday night. But the rain didn’t stop Tiger fans as they came out in force, cheering their team to a 14-13 win over Lindbergh at Oakville High School.

“It’s crazy to wait that long, but it’s what we all decided on doing,” Lindbergh coach Tom Beauchamp said. “Going home and restarting all tomorrow you don’t know what’s going to happen. I think Arlee (Conners) and I and the administrators did a good job of making sure it cleared off and we didn’t hardly have any rain.”

Oakville scored in the first quarter when Derrick Brown rushed in the end zone with two minutes left.

With just over a minute left in the half, Lindbergh's Blake Thomas caught a long pass to tie the game.

In the second half, Oakville lit up. 

Quarterback Andy Oliver threw a 17-yard pass to Avion Stevenson after a fake punt to take a 14-7 lead.

“We’ve been needing a receiver to step up for us big time all year,” Oakville coach Arlee Conners said about Stevenson. “It’s about time.”

Stevenson, a senior, said it was more about the support from his team than his performance.

“I can’t do it without the quarterback,” he said. “Honestly it’s all about the squad. We’re all in this together.”

Right after the touchdown, Oakville recovered a Lindbergh fumble on their 39-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, Lindbergh’s Chuck Houska caught a pass in the end zone. The Tigers blocked the extra point kick to keep the Flyers down by one. 

Sophomore Carvon Robinson had two interceptions to keep Lindbergh at bay in the last eight minutes.

“We’ve just got to fix a few things, we made too many errors, but I think everybody understands that we’re young,” Beauchamp said. “I believe in them. I believe they can get this done. We’re going to have to work hard and get ready and play the game.”

The coach said he was proud of the team's defense, which made several sacks on Oliver. 

“As a team, have to work a little harder, getting a little better on the little things,” Beauchamp said.

Lindbergh (1-2) will host CBC next Friday at 7 p.m. while Oakville (1-2) will travel to the Edwards Jones Dome to play Eureka.
