Lutheran South Bumped From Soccer Playoffs After Sectional Loss To Trinity Catholic

Lancers can't overcome early two-goal deficit, end season with 16-9-2 record.

LUTHERAN SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL – The Lutheran High South boys soccer team had its 2011 season ended Wednesday night, with a 3-1 loss in the MSHSAA Class 2 sectional playoffs to Trinity Catholic High of St. Louis.

Trinity’s Aaron Jezik scored two first-half goals to give the Titans an early edge, which along with a second-half penalty kick by teammate Tom Koerper, proved to be more than the Lancers could overcome.

Lutheran South got its goal from junior Zach Jones late in the first half, when teammate Parker VanNest broke free up the left side of the field, following a Trinity near-scoring chance.

VanNest beat several defenders up the field, and delivered a perfect cross-field pass to Jones, who broke through the Trinity penalty area and blasted home a shot for his 14th goal of the season, to make it 2-1 at halftime.

South also had a couple of scoring chances early in the second half, but after a handball call deep in Lancer territory gave the Titans a penalty kick, Trinity’s Tom Koerper converted the chance with 25 minutes left to make the score 3-1.

Trinity will now play in the state quarterfinals on Saturday, against Sikeston (MO) High, at Trinity High School at 1 p.m., with the winner of that contest advancing to the Class 2 soccer Final Four next weekend in Kansas City.

Other potential area teams that could advance to the Final Four, are Priory High and St. Dominic High, who will meet in another MSHSAA quarterfinal game at 1 p.m., on Saturday, at Priory High in Town and Country.

Lutheran South finishes its year with a 16-9-2 record.
