New York-Style Diner Draws Regulars With Retro Atmosphere

Café Manhattan in Affton looks and tastes like a classic New York City diner.

If you are in the mood for a blast from the past, head to for a slice of Americana. Located at 9992 Lin Ferry Dr., Café Manhattan opened its doors in 1989, offering customers American cuisine in a scene straight from the 50s.

“People that work here have a vested interest in the business and restaurant,” said Therese Swanston, a server with Café Manhattan, who has worked at the restaurant on and off for 10 years. “Everyone that works here has been here for years.”

With staff that has been a part of the restaurant for so many years, it is easy to see why it is so important to them to keep the restaurant family-oriented. In fact, Swanston commented that the restaurant is filled with regulars all the time. “It is a fun environment to work in and come to for lunch or dinner. Plus, we have a great patio out back that people love,” Swanston said.

When asked about the most popular dish at the restaurant, Swanston was quick to comment that many patrons favor the seasoned beef sandwich with au jus. Regulars love the pizza, as well. Between appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and shakes and a very kid-friendly menu, you are sure to find something on the menu that suits your palette. “We use (Kuna Foodservice) as our meat supplier. We just feel they have the best to offer,” Swanston said.

“We love coming here. The food is always great, along with the service, and the atmosphere is just fun,” Marilyn Greenman, a local restaurant-goer, said.

Matt McDermott, the kitchen manager, is quite laid back in his personal life but very serious when it comes to the food and upkeep of the restaurant, Swanston said. “He takes pride in serving fresh food to customers and believes in quality of quantity,” Swanston said.

“Everyone works to keep this place running well, and Matt has been here so many years before becoming the kitchen manager that he really genuinely cares about the restaurant,” Swanston said.

Summer is the busiest time for the restaurant. Besides the large patio, big tables and umbrellas, the restaurant tends to get packed as people head out for family meals together. So if you are looking for a time warp, and some American cuisine, check out the patio at Café Manhattan this spring.
