Sappington's Johnny's Market Closing in October

A longtime 'mom and pop' market will call it quits this fall. 

An employee with Johnny's Market, 11155 Gravois Rd., confirmed that the store will close on Oct. 13. A declining customer base is one the contributors to the market's closing, the employee said.

The grocery store will eliminate its Sunday hours after Labor Day. They're also shaving a couple hours off their Monday-Saturday operations after Sept. 2, and will be open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

John and Adel Loeffelman introduced the store to the community in 1944, according to the Johnny's Market website.

"According to legend, Johnny Loeffelman got into the grocery business on his way to catch a few catfish in 1944. A young meat cutter in a city market in South St. Louis, Johnny was on a little fishing vacation.... and before he knew it, he was involved in negotiations for the sale of the store."
