Shrewsbury Native Wins Cincinnati Club’s Golf Championship
John McLellan will try to qualify Monday for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Shrewsbury native and St. Louis University High School class of 1994 alum John McLellan won the club championship last weekend at Maketewah Golf Club in Cincinnati, where he is a member.
McLellan won the 54-hole match play championship 5&3, 6&4, and 8&7. He was 5-under-par through 11 holes when he clinched the championship on Sunday and the match ended. McLellan has also recorded scores of 64 and 63 the last two years at Maketewah, where the course record of 61 has stood for more than 40 years.
Following graduation from SLUH, where he was the 1992 Missouri Junior Amateur Champion, McLellan joined the Spring Hill College (Mobile, AL) men’s golf team where he was selected to the All-American team his junior year.
McLellan is now a store group manager for PPG Industries and oversees 18 Porter Paints stores in the Cincinnati/Dayton area. He will next try to qualify for the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship being held near Milwaukee August 22-28 at the Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club.
One of three boys and two girls born to Wayne and Margaret McLellan, John grew up on Nottingham Avenue and played alongside older brother Rob who also played golf collegiately (Butler University).
Rob McLellan is now a salesman at Forshaw Furniture in Frontenac. The brothers honed their golf skills while caddying at Old Warson C.C. (Ladue) and working at Tower Tee Golf Center (Affton) during high school and college.
