Bombings in Boston were nothing comparable to 9/11

Many people in our lives, whether people we know or media members, were comparing the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday to the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

While it's understandable that seeing the explosions aired over and over again would conjure up thoughts of seeing images of the World Trade Center towers crumbling to the ground, these events should not be compared because they are nothing alike.

Bombs did not bring down the World Trade Center or damage the Pentagon. Terrorists in planes did. Terrorists in planes, who then flew those aircrafts into three buildings. Three people died on Monday in Boston. The death toll in New York City on that Tuesday morning in September, 2001, was nearly 3,000.

It's an injustice to that tragedy, and those thousands that lost their lives, to compare today's events to it because the loss of life and impact was so much more severe. Many people on Monday tried to make Boston's tragedy more than what it was.

Yes, three people, and by tomorrow, maybe a few more, lost their lives and many more were injured. The people responsible should face, as President Obama called it, the full weight of justice. But there were also a string of bombings in Iraq on Monday that killed 42 people and injured hundreds more, yet nobody's talking about that.

Monday's events were high-profile and newsworthy because of its time and location, but were not anything comparable to the loss of life in New York City in 2001.
