I enjoy talking about the easiest, non-pharmacologic measures people can take to prevent disease. We have talked about diet and quitting smoking; now it is time to talk about exercise! Why exercise? Besides its cardiovascular benefits, it has been shown to help prevent many other diseases like dementia or osteoporosis. It can also help eliminate stress and anxiety and increase your energy. What exercise is recommended? Building up to 30 minutes a day a couple of times a week of aerobic exercise is preferred, but I won’t complain no matter what exercise you do. If you have joint problems, I recommend getting access to swim laps at a pool. You may never be Michael Phelps, but swimming is an excellent work-out and weight burner and much easier on the joints.
