Local Company Sees Explosive Growth in First Two Years

Local business furnishes farm tables and benches for purchase or for rent.

An idea that stemmed from a woodworking hobby and exceptional skill has grown into a thriving business called Ezekiel & Stearns (E&S) in the heart of the Midwest. Orders ship out daily to buyers all around the United States, with New York and San Francisco as the most common destinations. E&S tables have shipped as far as Tok, Alaska.

E&S furniture is typically made from naturally fallen timber. Farm tables and benches are best sellers, but E&S also makes chairs, television consoles, kitchen islands, coffee tables, and other home accents.

“I love making something new every day,” said Andrew Black, owner. “You can get the same look and quality as the expensive tables at one of the reputable home décor stores.”

Black is no stranger to creating things with his hands. In college, he sold handcrafted sailboats with a friend.

Prior to officially opening the business in 2013, Black worked in technology and prior to that, he was a special education teacher at McCluer High School. Black has a doctorate in education from Missouri Baptist University.

E&S has become a locally recognized name as well.

“Ezekiel & Stearns tables have unique character and a timeless look, and the quality is second to none,” said Sara Savat, Ezekiel & Stearns customer. “Our table and bench were the perfect additions to our kitchen. I’m sure we’ll have them for many, many years to come. I also like knowing that it was made locally.”

Ezekiel & Stearns started renting farm tables and benches for special events in January 2014. After a bride found his Web site, she inquired about renting the tables for her wedding. As a result, Black made 30 tables and 60 benches and started renting them. His busiest time of year is typically the fall, with many brides choosing farm and backyard weddings.

“When you consider how much you’ll spend to add a tablecloth, chair covers, and décor to a rented plastic table, you may find that renting farm tables fits your vision for your wedding and fits well within your budget,” said Black.
