In Rockwood, we strive to do whatever it takes to ensure all students realize their potential. Our goal is to PDFcultivate Rockwood learners who think creatively and critically; engage thoughtfully and respectfully; develop strong character; collaborate with others; and explore our world. Over the final month of the 2020-2021 school year, we will be celebrating fifth-, eighth- and 12th-grade students from around Rockwood who embody these characteristics and reflect the hopes, dreams and aspirations we hold for every child in our school community. Today, we feature Green Pines Elementary fifth-grader Luci Cordes-Palmer. ----------When she was in third grade, Luci Cordes-Palmer adopted a lemur at the Saint Louis Zoo. That helped spark a fascination in the ring-tailed primates native to Madagascar, eventually leading to Luci asking her teacher if she could share a PowerPoint presentation about lemurs with her class.During a post-presentation Q-and-A session, one of Luci's classmates asked her why she put all this extra work in to share her love of lemurs."She said it was just fun for her," her mother, Lesli Cordes, said."I like lemurs because they're like monkeys," Luci added.Luci has continually exhibited a love of learning and an eagerness to share with her classmates during her six years at Green Pines Elementary. Her current and former teachers say that Luci is a natural leader and is always willing to help out her classmates.Last school year, during the virtual end to the spring semester, Luci created a secret Google Classroom assignment for her and her fourth-grade classmates so they could all surprise their teachers for Teacher Appreciation Day."Luci has such a kind and giving heart," her teachers say. "She is usually the first one to offer assistance to a person in need. Luci is truly kind to everyone. She is driven to do the right thing and has a genuine desire to make things better for others."Luci is active in swimming, dancing and riding horses, and she loves to draw. She said she is going to miss all of the staff at Green Pines when she moves to Wildwood Middle next year, but she is also ready for the challenge. She is especially excited about the STEM classes she will take at Wildwood.  She is an aspiring scientist with a special interest in meteorology."I just want to do STEM projects," Luci said. "I'm looking forward to doing that."
