After the Deadline, All is not Lost
Affordable Care Act Coverage Still Possible If Situation Changes
St. Louis, MO. February 13, 2015 – With a February 15 deadline fast approaching to enroll in health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for 2015, thousands of uninsured people are rushing to beat the clock. But even if this weekend’s deadline passes you by, you still may be able to obtain coverage. “It is true that February 15 is the deadline for the current open enrollment period,” explained Mary Schaefer, executive director of the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging (MEAAA), which serves as a Navigator agency for the ACA. “But not everyone knows that they can still get covered in between enrollment periods if there is a change in their life situation.
For example, if someone loses health insurance as a result of a job loss or change, they can apply. The same is true if they are getting married or divorced.” MEAAA and other Navigators have been inundated recently with last minute applicants, many of who are applying for the first time. The agency provides information, outreach and assistance for individuals to shop for health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Schaefer says they only have a few applicants on still undecided, and her staff is on call to assist them if needed. “After the 15th, we will still be available to assist anyone that needs help,” said Schaefer. “In addition, we plan to host a number of outreach events and have a presence at community festivals throughout the year in case anyone has questions or wants to learn more.” Last minute applicants requiring assistance this weekend should use the zip code locator on the Covermissouri.org website, or call 1-800-318-2596 to find a counselor. Individuals wishing to contact MEAAA after the open enrollment period closes, can call 1- 800-293-6060. The MEAAA website, www.agingmissouri.org, also has more information.
