Balaban's To Open For Brunch Mother's Day!

Balaban’s Opens For Brunch, Brings Back Eggs Madison!

On Mother’s Day, May 12, and every Sunday thereafter, Balaban’s wine cellar & tapas bar® in Chesterfield will open for brunch.

With brunch, Balaban’s® picks up another tradition from the legendary Café Balaban® where for decades brunch set the scene in the Central West End.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays, Steve McIntyre, co-owner along with his friend and neighbor Brian Underwood, said, Balaban’s wine cellar & tapas bar® will serve both a brunch buffet and a special weekly brunch menu.

To welcome families for brunch, Balaban’s® buffet will price at $10 for children under 12 and $24 per person for adults.

Café Balaban’s® popular Eggs Madison—toasted English muffins, perfectly poached eggs, smoked salmon and accoutrements topped with the tangy house made hollandaise—returns to St. Louis this Mother’s Day on their brunch menu, according to McIntyre.

McIntyre indicated brunch service will fill both the bistro and their new private event space, completed late last year nearly doubling their footprint.

We plan an omelet station, carving table, desserts and pastries area as well as a full buffet line, he said.

“With the new space it makes sense to offer brunch.  After moving to Chesterfield in late 2009, we opened on Sunday for about the first six months with our regular menu but did not feel we could properly accommodate our clientele.

“Sunday rightly proved to be a family day and one less oriented to some of our other products,” McIntyre said.

“With brunch we continue in our dedication to renewing the French bistro style and the flair of Café Balaban® and to carrying on the tradition of an inviting atmosphere, fine wines, classic and creative dishes using fresh seasonal ingredients,” McIntyre said.

One of the better kitchens in town including a recognized corporate catering and event operation  and  a retail wine store, Balaban’s® awards since opening include a 2012 Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator  and 2012 best restaurant recognition from St. Louis Magazine among others.

Historical ties to the CWE bistro, opened in 1972 by Herb Balaban Carp, range from the name “Balaban’s®,” solely owned by the two partners; the original recipes;  McIntyre, executive chef and co-owner of Café Balaban® for more than 20 years; and the world class wine stock left when McIntyre sold Café Balaban® in 2006.
