Arthritis affects 50 million Americans, which is one in every five adults. While often associated with old age, arthritis can affect men, women and children of any age. In fact, there are currently 300,000 children in the U.S. living with arthritis. In Missouri alone, 1,325,000 adults are affected by arthritis.
More than just aches and pains, arthritis is a chronic condition that can make everyday activities such as getting dressed and preparing food almost impossible. The Arthritis Walk is a way to conquer this debilitating and unacceptable disease by raising funds for arthritis research, education and programs in communities across the country.
The Arthritis Walk also celebrates year-round movement as a means of preventing and treating arthritis. Just 30 minutes of exercise each day can be effective in reducing pain, stiffness and inflammation while improving mobility. According to Jan Bignall, Arthritis Foundation Executive Director, “Sometimes starting an exercise program can seem difficult, but it’s important for people to realize they can start slow and have fun. The Arthritis Walk is a great way to get some exercise with family and friends while raising critical funds to fight arthritis.”
The Greater St. Louis Arthritis Walk will feature Youth Honoree—Markie Bullington, a strong and courageous young lady who has been involved with the Foundation for the past thirteen years; and Medical Honoree, Dr. Francisco Garriga.
To learn more about this year’s honoree’s or to register for the Greater St. Louis area Arthritis Walk, visit www.arthritis.org or contact Jan Bignall at (314) 447-4881.
