Nearly 100 Gymnasts Score Top Honors At Chesterfield Meet

Nearly 100 gymnasts from St. Louis Gymnastics Centre (SLGC) took home first-place wins in last weekend's "2012 Meet Me in St. Louis" gymnastics competition held at
The two-day event featured nearly 1,500 athletes from eight Midwestern states. Patch was one of the major sponsors of the mega-event.

"We (the SLGC gymnasts) did pretty well," said Paul Hollis, a member of the parent organization, which charters the event. "But I don't think we did as well as in year's past. We had some really tough competition, especially from the other states."

Hollis estimated that between 6,000 and 6,500 spectators attended the event. In years past he said, the competition drew between 4,000 and 5,000 fans.

"I think more people attended because we didn't charge admission to the event," he said. "The stands were filled with new people, and every seat was taken."

Established in 1973, SLGC is the oldest, private gymnastics club in the St. Louis area. It is an official member of USA Gymnastics (USAG) and hosts the co-ed event each year. It's located in Webster Groves.

Editor's note: A "sanctioned" gymnast is a competitive gymnast who spends up to 20 hours a week, year round, training for "sanctioned" gymnastics events. Sanctions are requested by meet organizers such as SLGC and sanctions are given by the USAG organization.
