Restaurant Review Round-Up: Oishi Sushi

See what local residents are saying about Chesterfield restaurants.

The Restaurant Review Round-Up is exploring that most famous of Japanese delicacies this week and getting its chopsticks around Oishi Steakhouse and Sushi.

The sushi joint is located in Chesterfield Valley near the Wehrenberg Galaxy 14 Cine and the name comes from the Japanese word for "delicious." That seemed to be a sentiment shared by many Patch readers, as Oishi was voted "Best Sushi" in the Patch 2012 Reader's Choice poll.

The restaurant's website said its focus is using fresh, flavorful dishes with a striking presentation. Sushi dishes range from staples like salmon, tuna and yellowtail to rarer specialities like sea urchin and fatty tuna.

From Patch:

Patch Editor Brian Feldt gave it 5/5 stars and said: "Haven't been to the actual restaurant, but just got out of a sushi making class with Oishi head chef Jay Dedkhad and he was amazing! Great instructions, very nice and funny! But best of all was his sushi! I can't wait to head out to Oishi as soon as I'm able to actually eat again."

From Yelp:

Melissa C. gave it 4/5 stars and said: "The service on both sides of the restaurant was very good. The hibachi chef was a real treat with a lot of tricks. He was even able to toss a piece of food into each of our mouths which was pretty fun. ... My husband and I love sushi and Oishi is our second favorite sushi place. We really love the Dynamite Roll, the Caterpiller is also very good. I haven't had a roll at Oishi that I didn't enjoy. ... Their miso soup is the best around."

Natalie L. gave it 1/5 stars and said: "We went to Oishi after checking it out on Yelp. Boy, were we disappointed. The fish was not fresh. The rolls tasted pre-made. They used imitation crab. They charged $1.50 for extra spicy mayo. A bunch of the rolls on the menu are made with salmon and the only option for substitution was yellow fin, even if we were willing to pay. Their rolls were boring...no real surprises or anything unique about any of them."

Alana Z. gave it 5/5 stars and said: "My boyfriend and I ALWAYS order the volcano roll. It is a deep-fried roll of salmon and avocado topped with this superb mixture of spicy scallop. The spicy scallop makes all the difference, believe me. My parents used to own a restaurant and my dad almost drank the spicy scallop mixture when I brought the roll home for them once. He knows what good sauces and tastes mean, and this roll definitely brings it!"

From Urban Spoon

Sushi_lover liked it and said: "I love sushi, and have tried just about every sushi restaurant in the area. Though not as diverse in sushi rolls as wasabi, I must say it's by far the best in the chesterfield area."
