CLAYTON, Mo. — It’s a sad reality that nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. When that happens, women often face a greater decline in financial resources than men. For that reason, University of Missouri Extension offers a quarterly financial seminar for women considering divorce or in the early stages of the divorce process.
Divorce on the Horizon? Considerations for Women is a three-hour seminar to be held 6-9 p.m. Thursday, September 13 at the MU Extension Center, 121 S. Meramec, Clayton.
Instructors include Suzanne Gellman, MS, JD, extension consumer economics specialist, Teresa Mareschal, extension human development specialist, and other local professionals.

“Divorce is a reality for many women,” said Gellman, who coordinates the seminar. “One example of the type of information we provide is that all people, especially women, should have a bank account in their own name and a credit card in their own name. If they haven’t done that and they’re facing divorce, they should start saving as much money as possible and open their own account.”
Topics include the Missouri divorce process, selecting and working with a lawyer, custody and visitation, child support, money issues, spousal support, property and debt division, separation agreements, helping children cope with divorce, dealing with the emotional loss in divorce, and maintaining and restoring self-esteem.
