Use Your Smartphone While Grilling Out This Summer

With summer in full swing, the sizzling sounds of the grill and the smell of smoked foods is starting to fill backyards across the community. To ensure that those manning the grill can still find time to enjoy friends and family during these summer months, U.S. Cellular is providing a list of applications that will make it easier than ever to dish up delicious barbecue fare. 

“We know the importance of spending time with family and friends, and today’s smartphones can help those who are in charge of entertaining gain quick access to wonderful recipes and a host of other helpful tips and tools, so they can simplify the process and spend more time with those they care about,” said Nathan Waddell, director of sales for U.S. Cellular. “Using your smartphone as a grilling tool also saves money on recipe books, and while you can’t yet use one to check the temperature of your meat, cooking apps with timers can help ensure your food is cooked exactly to your liking.”

Several applications that help turn the novice chef into a master in the kitchen and at the grill include:

  • Epicurious – Epicurious is an award-winning, free application found in Google Play (formerly the Android market) that offers over 28,000 professionally-tested and created recipes. The app categorizes recipes to make searching for a recipe easy, such as “Fourth of July” or “Grilling Entrees.” You can also simply say the name of a recipe into any of today’s cutting-edge devices, such as the Samsung Aviator, and instantly retrieve it.
  • BigOven – Do you have extra ingredients or leftovers from the BBQ? BigOven offers a way to use them up with the Leftover Wizard. By entering up to three ingredients or random items in your refrigerator, BigOven pulls up meal options that use those ingredients, helping you get the most out of your groceries. This app is free and is available on Android-powered, BlackBerry or Windows devices. 
  • Campbell’s Kitchen – This application is easy to use and offers thousands of delicious recipes, including great barbecue recipes. By entering the prep time, cook time and who’s eating, just shake the phone and the application comes up with a meal suggestion. It’s a great application for an indecisive cooker and it’s fun. This free app is available in the Android Market and the BlackBerry version of the app is called “Cook with Campbell’s.”
  • Weber’s on the Grill – Anyone who loves to barbecue will love this app. It features 280 classic Weber recipes plus 40 recipe rubs, marinades and sauces to get you fired up. There is also a timer within this app so you know exactly when to take a look at the food sizzling on the grill. This application costs $4.99 but is much cheaper than buying a cookbook and you can have all the information you need right at your fingertips!
