There’s no doubt that Americans are living longer. A child born in the United States in 2005 can expect to live nearly 78 years – nearly a decade longer than one who was born in 1955.
So we’re living longer … but are we aging successfully? Today, being over age 50 is no longer “old.” Instead it can be a productive and fulfilling time. Children are grown and out of the house and life is, perhaps, more peaceful… but definitely not static.
Still, our bodies are getting older. So maintaining an active life style and good health can ensure you will enjoy those golden years. When it comes to successful aging, here are three general actions you can take:

Get involved in your community. Whether it’s helping at a neighborhood event, or serving as a tutor at a local school, research shows that those who volunteer have lower rates of depression and mortality, a greater sense of belonging, and higher functional ability than those who do not. Getting and staying involved will definitely contribute to a better life, for you and for your fellow citizens and neighbors.
Participate in your healthcare. Our doctors are the experts, but it’s important to be as informed as we possibly can about our own health. Asking questions, understanding what influences your health condition (nutrition, exercise, etc.) and taking steps to stay healthy are the best things you can do to ensure and enjoy your longevity. Just 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week can help you improve your health and quality of life.

Be a lifelong learner. Growing older successfully is not just about physical health; it’s also about brain health. At any age, you can challenge your brain to grow new cells, build new connections and enhance your problem-solving abilities and memory. As a student in a continuing education computer class or at a workshop on the arts, you’ll keep your brain moving along and staying healthy.
