Clayton Farmer's Market Opening Day Celebration

Cycles are a natural part of life and nothing shows off their rhythms with more contrast and cause for celebration than the arrival of Spring its warmer days and blossoming greenery.

One of the things I find most enjoyable about living in the Midwest is the contrast between the seasons. We are in a temperate zone which usually punctuates climate changes with four distinct seasons. But what happens when winter doesn't occur and spring arrives early giving us very little difference between the seasons?

First of all, I say we still celebrate, because--well, I have to confess--it's Fun!!  And secondly, it's a "time-honored" tradition to mark the arrival of something new or special in our lives.  So, we at the Clayton Farmer's Market are having a party for the and everyone's invited.

I heard on the news recently that the folks who host the annual Daffodil Festival were trying to figure out how to have a festival honoring this lovely spring flower  when daffodils had already bloomed a month earlier. They still celebrated.

It was so warm this past winter some of our farmers harvested carrots and bok choy long into February and even though our local asparagus has been abundant and delicious, it too grew a month earlier than usual. And, the farmers have been harvesting strawberries for at least three weeks now.

Although, it seems strange not to have had a real Midwest winter this year, most people I've spoken to are excited about the abundance that's resulting in the local fruit and vegetable crops. And I think that's cause for celebration!
