Clayton Weekly Police Incident Report: July 20th - 26th

Don't rely on a garage door to keep your items safe, especially in a shared garage. People are forgetful & garage doors fail.

For the reporting period of Monday, July 20th - Sunday, July 26th, CPD officers responded to 314 calls for service including 4 automobile accidents & 26 calls to assist the Fire Department. Among those calls were several reports of items stolen from unlocked vehicles or garages. Prevention is the key to stopping these crimes of opportunity & we need your help. Don’t rely on a garage door to keep your items safe, especially in a shared garage. People are forgetful & garage doors fail. Get in the habit of removing anything of value (including keys & remotes) from your vehicle & lock your vehicle even while it’s parked in your garage.

Sometime over the past week, the interior of the ice rink building at Shaw Park was vandalized by unknown subjects. The damage was discovered by park employees Monday morning.

Monday afternoon, a resident in the 200 block of S. Brentwood reported jewelry was stolen from her apartment. She believes employees of the building’s cleaning crew are responsible for the theft.

After working overnight Tuesday in the central business district, a man discovered his wallet & a handgun had been stolen from his vehicle. The vehicle was left unlocked while parked in an unsecure public garage.

Thursday morning, 2 residents in the central business district reported items were stolen from their unlocked vehicles overnight. Taken were change, a purse, a wallet & sunglasses. Officers later learned the door for the building’s garage is damaged, leaving the garage unsecured.

A traffic stop in the area of S. Hanley Rd. & Davis Pl. Thursday night resulted in the arrest of the driver for Possession of Marijuana.

Friday morning, a resident in the 6400 block of Alamo reported her vehicle had been rummaged through overnight. Taken from the vehicle were change & several articles of clothing.

AVIS management contacted the CPD Friday afternoon after multiple failed attempts to recover a rental vehicle from a repeat customer. Contact was made with the customer who claimed the vehicle had been stolen in the City of St. Louis. There is no record the vehicle was reported as stolen & investigation is ongoing.

Friday evening, a resident returned to her home on Forest Ct. to discover several items had been stolen from the building’s shared garage. The woman was in the process of moving into the building & left the boxes of clothing, accessories & décor unattended while she was offsite.

Officers responded to Shaw Park in the early morning hours Sunday for a report of subjects inside the pool area. 4 subjects fled the area on foot. A 5th subject, a juvenile, was released from the scene to a parent.

Finally, Walgreens employees reported a man was concealing merchandise on his person Sunday afternoon. Arriving officers located the man inside the store, near the register. When the man noticed the officers, he abandoned his cart & exited the store, setting off the security alarm. The man was stopped in the parking lot & was found to be in possession of stolen merchandise & drug paraphernalia. The merchandise was returned to the store & he was arrested for possession of the drug paraphernalia.
