CLAYTON, MO — The St. Louis Artists’ Guild presents Como Fue, a solo exhibition by Lauren Cardenas, the Artists’ Guild’s Fall 2012 Printmaking Artist-in-Residence. The stark, haunting prints in Cardenas’s exhibition evoke feelings of loneliness, longing, and solitude.

Through her work in Como Fue, Cardenas explores her long-standing interest in the voids found in domestic spaces. Cardenas assembles her images by taking mundane objects (such as bed sheets, paper, pills, and thread) and arranging them on a photocopier to create black and white compositions. “I employ the photocopy machine as a tool, exploiting its immediacy in order to capture ephemeral moments in a static picture plane,” says Cardenas. The dramatic interplay of positive and negative space in Cardenas’s work recalls the empty spaces we encounter in our everyday environments.
