City of Clayton honors local people for their role in resuscitating a 62-year-old man who'd gone into cardiac arrest during cycling class at Wellbridge Athletic Club.

People go to the gym to workout, getting the heart pumping and staying healthy, but one man is feeling very blessed after things wentΒ awryΒ in his cycling class.
Jerry Budai, 62,Β is a member ofΒ Wellbridge Athletic ClubΒ andΒ SpaΒ in Clayton. Β He went into cardiac arrest during a cycling class at the club and collapsed on his bike on April 20.
Shelly Bittle, the class instructor,Β along with three of itsΒ members, who all happen to be in the medical field, went into action to stabilize Budai.Β Β
The City of Clayton and its fire departmentΒ recently honored the group for its actions on May 28.Β
When Budai collapsed,Β Bittle said sheΒ quickly applied theΒ emergency training procedures the club has in place. She said the three people that helped her,Β Robert Barrack andΒ Nikoleta Kolovos, both doctors; along withΒ Lisa Simani-Oren helped her toΒ assessΒ Budai and recognize his symptoms as those of someone inΒ Β sudden cardiac arrest. Budai had no pulse and wasnβt breathing, according to aΒ WellbridgeΒ statement.Β
βItβs vital that the heart return to normal rhythm as soon as possible in the event of cardiac arrest, as a fewΒ seconds can be the difference between life and death,β Greg McCarthy, the Clayton location'sΒ general manager said.
Budai was taken toΒ St. Maryβs Hospital.
